Mae Sai District in Chiang Rai was flooded last night by the overflow of the Sai River

The Sai River burst its banks early this morning, flooding commercial and residential areas in Muang District in northern Chiang Rai Province after raining heavily since last night (Friday).

The level of the already swollen river rose so fast that the authorities could not warn residents and businesses in time, so they did not have enough time to bring their valuables to higher areas.

Around 5:15 a.m., it was reported that flooding has receded in some areas, although it is still raining slightly.

In the middle of last night, the village of San Kong in the Mae Rai subdistrict of Mae Chan district was hit by flooding of the Mae Rai stream, which flows down from Chiang Tung Mountain.

Due to the strong current of the flood, the wall of the San Kong Temple was partially torn down. A number of food vendors at the San Kong market complained that the ingredients they had prepared for cooking in the morning were swept away by the current. The access road to the government-sponsored Doi Tung project at the foot of the mountain was also under water.

Mae Sai District Police said on their website this morning that officers have been dispatched to help those affected by the floods. Last night's flooding in Mae Sai District is the second since mid-August.
